2teaspoonsapple pie spice
1/8teaspoonsalt
3Granny Smith applespeeled, cored and sliced – about 6 cups
Instructions
Melt butter in a large pan over low heat until it turns brown and emits a nutty aroma, roughly 8-10 minutes.
Stir in brown sugar, apple pie spice, and salt into the browned butter until well mixed. Gradually mix in the sliced apples, ensuring they are well coated.
Cover the pan and simmer on low, mixing now and then, for 10-15 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the liquid in the pan has increased.
Take off the cover, switch the heat to medium-high, and cook for another 3-5 minutes, stirring, until the liquid is reduced by half and thickens into a syrup. Take off from the heat.
Notes
This recipe works with both peeled and unpeeled apples, though unpeeled apples require more cooking time.Slicing the apples thinly will speed up their softening during cooking, and thicker slices will take longer.
