Jamaica has many refreshing drinks and this Jamaican Lemonade happens to be one of my favorites. Jamaican Lemonade, also known as limeade, differs from other lemonade recipes.

The first huge difference is that Jamaicans use limes in their lemonade rather than lemons. Sure, calling it Jamaican limeade is also acceptable, but when you ask a Jamaican for a glass of lemonade, this version is likely what you will get.

The use of limes in Jamaican Lemonade is mostly because limes are more readily available in Jamaica so when it came to making lemonade, limes were used instead.

The other difference is the use of brown sugar rather than white sugar. The brown sugar gives the drink a darker color and a nice depth of flavor. This limeade can also be sweetened with honey or a little bit of molasses. According to my Jamaican mother, brown sugar was also more readily available than white sugar when she was growing up.

How to make Jamaican Lemonade

First, gather your ingredients. All you will need is some limes, brown sugar, and water.

Squeeze the limes into a glass until you get about 1/2 cup of lime juice. This takes about 4-5 limes.

Add the brown sugar to the lime juice and stir to combine. This allows your sugar to dissolve easily so you don’t have bits of sugar in the lemonade.

Pour this mixture into a large pitcher and add the water.

FAQ

Should I make simple syrup?

Many lemonade recipes call for making a simple syrup by heating the water and sugar before adding the remaining ingredients. The purpose is to dissolve the sugar in the water. In this recipe, adding the sugar to the lime juice will dissolve the sugar without the need of heating any liquid.

Can I add liquor to this lemonade?

You sure can! A splash of vodka or rum turns this into an adult lemonade.
