There’s nothing like the taste of a classic peach cobbler, and this recipe uses canned peaches for an easy, no-fuss dessert. With just a few simple ingredients, you can have this sweet and delicious treat ready in no time.
A popular dessert in the South among the African-American community, this homemade peach cobbler has multiple ways you can make it. Some only use fresh peaches, while others stick with canned peaches. Others use peaches in a heavy syrup, which doesn’t need additional sugar. Some use a biscuit topping, while others use a pie crust topping.
All tend to be delicious, but this one right here is my favorite! I use canned peaches because I can access them year-round. I also make sure to use the canned peaches in 100% fruit juice rather than those in heavy syrup. Canned peaches sweetened with heavy syrup usually are sweetened with high fructose corn syrup and sugar. Making your syrup with canned peaches in fruit juice is well worth it; plus, it’s healthier!
I also use a biscuit topping rather than pie crust. It’s just how I’ve been taught, and I love it. The biscuit stays nice and soft on the bottom and crispy around the edges. However, if pie crust is your jam, feel free to top your peach cobbler with a pie crust.
How to make Peach Cobbler with Canned Peaches
First, gather your ingredients. You’ll need the following:
- Unsalted butter – melted butter for the peach mixture and some cold butter for the biscuit topping.
- Canned Peaches: Peaches in 100% fruit juice will work best here. You will need two 15oz cans. You’ll want to drain one can and leave the other can undrained for the perfect syrup ratio.
- Spices: Cinnamon, nutmeg, salt.
- Sugars: Brown sugar for the filling and granulated sugar for the biscuit topping.
- All-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, and milk – to make the biscuit topping.
Next, preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Place the butter in a 1.5-quart baking dish and place in the preheated oven. Allow the butter to melt in the baking dish. Once melted, remove the pan from the oven.
Add the peaches (one of the cans drained, the other left undrained) to the baking dish. Add the brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt to the dish. Stir until combined. Set aside.
Next, create your cobbler biscuit dough. Add all-purpose flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt to a large bowl and stir to combine. Add the cold butter. Using a pastry cutter or two forks, mix in butter. The flour mixture should still have chunks of butter that are the size of small peas.
Make a well in the middle of the bowl and add milk. Stir until combined.
Spoon the dough over the peaches until most of the peach mixture is covered. Leave the edges uncovered.
Bake in preheated oven for 50 minutes to an hour until the top is golden.
Remove and allow to cool for about 5 minutes before serving. Serve warm, topped with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
What is the best kind of canned peaches to use in a peach cobbler?
I suggest using peaches in 100% fruit juice rather than the ones in syrup. Peaches in fruit juice don’t have added sugars or additives, allowing you to control the amount of sugar and other ingredients that go into your cobbler. This peach cobbler recipe, as written, creates a delicious syrup with minimal work.
Can I use fresh peaches instead of canned?
Absolutely! Using fresh peaches involves a bit more work as you will need to peel the peaches and adjust the amount of sugar and butter to make a syrup. Follow this peach cobbler recipe with fresh peaches to make it.
What should I top peach cobbler with?
Vanilla ice cream and whipped cream are great toppings for peach cobbler.
How should I serve peach cobbler?
You’ll want to serve this cobbler warm after resting for about 5-10 minutes. Serve it in a bowl topped with your favorite toppings.
How to reheat peach cobbler?
Peach cobbler is best reheated in the oven, but it can also be reheated in the microwave. If reheating peach cobbler made with canned peaches, preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Place the peach cobbler in an oven-safe dish and heat for 15 minutes or until heated through.

This is the recipe I've been searching for. I wanted a recipe I could use and not have to rely on pie crusts. The other recipes were doughy and too wet. This is the second time I've made it and I absolutely love it. I didn't change a thing. Thank you so much.
