What Is Green Bean Casserole

Green bean casserole is a popular American side dish that’s become a Thanksgiving standard in homes across America. The recipe originated in the 1950’s with Campbell’s Soup company; one of the main ingredient is their cream of mushroom soup. These days there are lot of variations to the recipe but the main ingredients remain the same: green beans, cream of mushroom soup and French Fried onions.

  • Green Beans 
  • Cream Of Mushroom Soup
  • French Fried Onions
  • Salt & Pepper

How To Make Green Bean Casserole In The Slow Cooker

Slow Cooker

  1. Spray the slow cooker generously with cooking spray. 
  2. Drain & rinse the green beans and add them to the slow cooker. 
  3. Add the cream of mushroom soup, 2/3 of the French fried onions, and salt & pepper to taste.
  4. Stir to mix well. 
  5. Cook HIGH 2-3 hours or LOW 4-6. 
  6. Top with remaining French Fried onions. Cover but set the lid ajar. Cook 10-15 minutes or until French fried onions are heated through.

What Type Of Green Beans To Use

This easy green bean casserole follows the original recipe so it uses canned green beans. Canned green beans are already cooked. 4 cups of canned green beans is approximately 2 cans of store-bought green beans.

FAQs & Tips

  • Do not add too much liquid. Normally green bean casserole calls for milk. While you can add milk to this recipe, it is not necessary. If you want to, do not add more than 1/4 cup otherwise the casserole will be too watery
  • Store leftover casserole in a airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days or in the freezer for up to 2 months.

  • 4 cups cut green beans (cooked)
  • 1 10 1/2-ounce can cream of mushroom
  • 1 1/3 cup French fried onions, divided
  • Salt & pepper to taste
